A PROPOSED
NZ
HALAL BILL
"Prevents
consumer fraud in the preparation, distribution and sale
of food represented as halal"
"The potential value of the global
Halal food market could rise to USD 500 billion, according
to figures released by the International Market Bureau of
Canada, with Middle East-based companies standing to benefit
most from increased market opportunities." Source

The Halal Union is taking the initiative
to carry out a feasibility study to determine the viability
of introducing a Halal Bill to support the NZ$250 million
Halal meat export industry. Questions such as:
-
Does current New Zealand Legislation
sufficiently protect the customers/producers from fraud?
-
Does the Fair Trading Act, and other
legislation administered by the Commerce Commission,
provide adequate consumer protection for goods described
as "Halal" and ensure the overseas Halal customers of the
quality of New Zealand Halal products?
-
Why small countries like Singapore and
Brunei with no/limited animal livestock resources are
considering/passing such legislation?
-
What are the advantages and
disadvantages of having a Halal Food Bill in New Zealand?
-
Is New Zealand in a good position to
increase its share from the global Halal Market?
-
Who else in the world is working
towards Halal legislation?
-
Does the proposed Halal Bill have the
support of the New Zealand Muslim Community, Food and
beverage industry?
-
What are the anticipated social and
economical developments from the Bill?
-
What is the additional cost to the tax
payer to introduce and implement the proposed Halal Bill?
The above and more can be addressed by an
intensive study. In order for New Zealand to take a lead
position in the promising Global Halal Industry, the Halal
Union believes it is time to carry out a comprehensive study
that will produce a positive outcome. After raising the
funds needed the Halal Union will contract a leading New
Zealand institution to undertake the feasibility study. If
you think the idea deserves a professional and inclusive
study then please feel free to contribute financially. The
Halal Union welcomes you and your valuable support. Please
